Description: Offered here is an unusual hand-carved Chinese Yixing-style purple clay teapot in superb condition. The ornamentation includes the heads of two traditional Chinese dragons as though they’ve broken through the wall of the tea pot, eyes trained on the traditional dragon’s magical pearl. A small part of a dragon’s body is seen at the bottom of the front side as though it has burst through from inside the teapot. The handle is organically fashioned as a bent branch, with ancient tree characteristic details, with an off-shoot branch trailing along the other side of the teapot sprouting flowers. The asymmetrical egg-shaped lid is decorated with slender flowering branches. The lid and the spout both have details suggesting a continuation of the tree branch motif. Also on the back side is the tip of a dragon’s tail as though it were breaking through the teapot. The best words for this unusual design are “charming” and “whimsical.” Design and shape throughout is very free-form, not at all symmetrical. Three feet give it solid support and provide some ventilation so the heat from the tea inside won’t damage a wooden tabletop. In superb condition, with no odors of any kind. I’m told by an expert that the writing on the bottom says “Made by Shen Honghui,” and the tiny mark on the underside of the handle says “Honghui,” the potter’s given name. I’m also told this teapot was likely made about 25 years ago. Stands approximately four inches high. I am by no means a teapot authority, so please ask me any questions for details I may have overlooked.
