Route 49 is the highway that defines California: the classic Gold Rush Trail, along the western foothills of the Sierras. When gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848, everyone flocked westward to get their share of treasure, and this led directly to the territory being incorporated as a state in 1851. Route 49 was first designated as far back as 1906: it was California's first route to receive a number. When it came time to sign the routes, around 1932, it was Route 49 that was the first sign that was ever made up as a sample, to represent California's history. Route 49, complete with the classic bear above the number, was first signed in the field 1934, as part of the original signing of California state routes. It has always traveled the same route that it does today - from Quincy in the north to Oakhurst in the south, past such historic places as Auburn and Placerville (then known garishly as Hangtown!) to the enchanting village of Downieville, which looks much the same these days as it did in 1880 ... or one can branch off of 49 and see the majesty of Yosemite National Park, or take the 70 past its end across the mountains along the famous Beckworth Pass. Route 49 has it all - history, scenery, you name it! An original of these, complete with the diamond logo logo of the California State Auto Association, would cost many thousands of dollars if it ever came to the market. I've been lucky to own precisely one of these original signs, and let me tell you it took quite the effort to lure it out of my hands. So this is the closest you will get. This is a high quality,heavy steel sign. Accept no imitations that may be one-third this price, but are one-tenth the quality. No cheap tin to be found here, with the wrong fonts, layouts, size, shape, or any other manner of embarrassing imperfection.
