Description: You are looking at a brand new Cal Ripken Special Edition “The Streak” 2131 fielder’s glove autographed by Cal Ripken. Rip autographed the pinky area in bold silver paint pen as pictured. For some background, I managed a sports memorabilia shop here in southern California years ago. If you were around the sports collectibles world in the 1990s, you were well aware of Don West and the screaming heads on Shop at Home pitching autographed sports memorabilia from Score Board. They also pitched what we called “manufactured” memorabilia, which would be, for example, those specially made limited edition (of 10,000 or so) gold plated McGwire home run chase cards, or Michael Jordan mystery packages which included a bunch of retail distributed items. Unfortunately, in the last 20 years we have seen everyone copy the certs and stick them with items never signed for Score Board, featuring claims of authenticity for signatures by athletes who never signed for Score Board. It has made Score Board into a bad word as far as authenticity goes. However, Score Board did plenty of autograph signings. As I recall they did a signing with Ripken shortly after he broke Gehrig’s consecutive games played streak and sold a ton of different signed items through Shop at Home. I believe Cal may have been on the program at one point, but I can't recall that specifically. This glove was purchased from a collector who had gone nuts with buying autographed memorabilia from Shop at Home. I recall we purchased the Ryan/Feller/Koufax no hitter balls, Ripken 2131 balls (they did several variations), Aaron balls, Griffey balls, and I believe the Ewing/Olajuwon photos in the same collection, all in the original shipper boxes (Ewing was an impossible signature at the time, but he did sign for Score Board). We would have them certed by PSA or JSA over the years and never had an issue. I took this one home and kept it for myself as I always thought Ripen was a genius in the field.
