Description: Welcome to one of our many auctions here at tank buddies. I started off as a hobbyist, that grew into a garage “business” that now wants to raise money for enslaved/ human trafficked kids around the world. I was recently accepted into a team that physically goes and rescues these kids. Almost all funds will be going towards rescuing and raising up these kids. Please feel free to ask any questions and if I can’t help please see the link below to the nonprofit I am associated with. https://thechildrensrescue.org/ Everything is bred in my fish room and I strive to breed the best and healthiest fish for your freshwater aquariums. My goal is to help educate based off the experiences I have encountered in my underwater adventures and share some of the cool water friends I have with you. Please feel free to ask questions, I tend to respond quickly. I breed 30+ species and a swap things out throughout the year. You can always check out our website to see updated stocking list. General Information: The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish (Pseudomugil luminatus) is a vibrant and striking species of freshwater fish from the family Pseudomugilidae. This fish is known for its beautiful coloration, especially the iridescent blue eyes and the red and blue hues that it displays in the right lighting conditions. It is a popular choice for aquarists who want a colorful, peaceful, and active fish to add to their freshwater community tanks. 1. Physical Appearance:Size: The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is a relatively small species, growing to around 1.5 to 2.5 inches (4 to 6 cm) in length. This makes them suitable for smaller to medium-sized aquariums.Coloration: The male Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is particularly colorful, with its body displaying a mix of red, blue, and silver tones. The body itself is typically a pale silver or grayish base color, and its fins can show hints of red or orange, especially on the caudal fin (tail), which contributes to its "red neon" appearance. The blue eyes are a striking feature, making this species stand out in the aquarium. The eye color is bright and neon-like, giving the fish an almost glowing appearance under the right lighting.Sexual Dimorphism: Males are generally more colorful, with vibrant red and blue tones and longer, more elaborate fins. Females are more subdued in color, typically lacking the intense red and blue hues of the males. Females are also slightly larger and rounder, especially when they are carrying eggs. 2. Origin and Habitat:Native Range: The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is native to northern Australia, specifically in the rivers, streams, and wetlands of Queensland and New Guinea. They are typically found in areas with clear water, slow-moving streams, and vegetation-rich environments.Natural Habitat: In the wild, they prefer habitats with plenty of plants and shade. These fish are found in areas that are relatively shallow, with soft to moderate water conditions, often in regions that have a slight flow but are not fast-moving. 3. Tank Requirements:Tank Size: The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is a small species, and a 10-gallon (38-liter) tank is sufficient for a small group. However, a 20-gallon (76-liter) tank or larger is ideal for better water quality and more swimming space, especially if you plan to keep multiple species.Water Parameters:Temperature: 72-80°F (22-27°C)pH: 6.5-7.5 (slightly acidic to neutral)Hardness: 2-15 dGH (soft to moderately hard)Aquarium Setup: A well-planted tank with lots of live plants like Java Fern, Anubias, and Hornwort will provide them with places to hide and swim among. The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish also appreciates the presence of some driftwood or rocks. A gentle filtration system is preferred, as they do not thrive in tanks with strong currents.Lighting: These fish are most colorful when exposed to moderate lighting. Too much bright light may cause them to be more reclusive, so it is important to maintain balanced lighting levels in the tank. 4. Diet:Omnivorous: The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is omnivorous, and it will readily eat a wide variety of foods. In the wild, they feed on small insects, zooplankton, and plant material.Commercial Foods: High-quality flake foods or pellets designed for small tropical fish are perfect as a base diet.Live and Frozen Foods: They enjoy live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms, which help to boost their color and promote health.Vegetable Matter: These fish will also appreciate occasional vegetable matter, such as spirulina, blanched zucchini, or spinach.Feeding Frequency: They should be fed small amounts 2-3 times per day, providing a varied diet to ensure they remain healthy and vibrant. 5. Behavior:Active and Peaceful: The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is a very peaceful and active species. It enjoys swimming in the middle to upper areas of the tank but also interacts with the environment, often foraging along the substrate for food.Social Fish: These fish should be kept in groups of at least 6 or more individuals to encourage natural schooling behavior and reduce stress. When kept in groups, they exhibit more vibrant colors and feel more comfortable in the tank. Not Aggressive: They are non-aggressive towards other peaceful species, making them excellent candidates for a community aquarium. However, they may be shy at first, especially if they are kept with overly active or aggressive tank mates.Shy Nature: When first introduced to the tank, they might be a bit shy, but once they settle in, they become active and social with other fish in the same tank. 6. Breeding:Breeding in Captivity: The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is relatively easy to breed in the aquarium, especially when the right conditions are provided. They are egg-layers, and breeding typically occurs when the water quality is optimal, and the fish are in good condition.Mating Behavior: Males will display vibrant colors to attract females. They perform a courting display, where they show off their red and blue colors. After the female accepts the male, they will spawn by releasing eggs among plants or on the substrate.Eggs and Fry: The eggs hatch within about 5 to 7 days, and the fry are very small. They can be fed with infusoria or microworms until they are large enough to eat finely crushed flake foods. It's best to remove adult fish from the breeding tank to protect the eggs and fry from predation.Parental Care: These fish do not provide care for their eggs or fry, so it’s important to ensure that they are in a safe environment until they can fend for themselves. 7. Health and Lifespan:Lifespan: With proper care, the Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish can live for 4 to 6 years in an aquarium.Common Health Issues: These fish are relatively hardy but may be susceptible to common freshwater fish diseases such as Ich (white spot disease) or Velvet disease if water conditions are poor or if they are stressed.Water Quality: They are sensitive to poor water quality, so regular water changes (about 25% per week) are necessary to maintain optimal health.Stress: Stress from aggressive tank mates, poor water conditions, or drastic changes in temperature can lead to health problems. 8. Compatibility:Community Fish: The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is best suited for a peaceful community aquarium. They get along well with a variety of other species, including:Tetras (e.g., Neon Tetras, Rummynose Tetras)Rasboras (e.g., Harlequin Rasboras)Other Rainbowfish speciesCorydoras CatfishSmall Livebearers (e.g., Guppies, Platies)Avoid Aggressive Species: They should not be kept with larger or aggressive species that might bully them, such as larger cichlids or fast-moving fish. 9. Popularity:The Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is quite popular in the aquarium trade due to its striking appearance, small size, and peaceful nature. It’s an excellent choice for hobbyists who enjoy keeping peaceful community tanks or those who want to add colorful fish to a well-planted aquarium. 10. Care Tips:Water Quality: Ensure stable water parameters with regular water changes, maintaining soft water conditions for the best health and coloration.Aquarium Setup: Provide plants, hiding spots, and gentle filtration. They will thrive in a well-planted aquarium with subdued lighting.Social Environment: Keep them in groups of at least 6 individuals for optimal well-being and to encourage natural schooling behavior. In summary, the Red Neon Blue Eye Rainbowfish is a stunning, peaceful, and active species that makes a fantastic addition to a freshwater community aquarium. With its vibrant colors, small size, and peaceful nature, it is an ideal choice for hobbyists looking for a colorful and hardy fish to brighten up their tanks. Proper care, a varied diet, and stable water conditions will ensure that these fish thrive and display their full potential.
