Description: This exquisite, one-of-a-kind table top was created by an artisan/artisans in the late 19th century. Each piece of straw and intricate lace-like patterns of wood, were placed by hand to create the Vatican and surrounding historic Italian landmarks. This craftsmanship is known as Marquetry. The theme in this table that connects all scenes with the Vatican in the center, is the sun's rays splaying out over each one. We have this displayed in our antique shop and I have photographed it in several places so you can see how well the light captures the brilliant technique that makes it pop in a 3-D like fashion. We hung the top on a wall to preserve it. The base is in storage for safe keeping. When it's attached to the base, it's a tilt top to be displayed as art on an easel, or as a table.
