Description: Rare engraved copy of the Declaration of Independence by Eleazar Huntington from 1820-1824. The document itself measures 22 inches x 17 1/2 inches. The frame measures 30 inches x 24 inches. Included in the framing is a county fair blue ribbon from 1917. Eleazer Huntington was a master calligrapher and engraver who intentionally retained the feel of the original Declaration using Benjamin O Tyler's earlier 1818 facsimile as a model. Thus, the famous signatures are faithfully reproduced without embellishment. Huntington's engravings of the Declaration often hung in nineteenth century schoolhouses, which resulted in condition flaws. Very few have survived to present day. This one was the prized possession of a local family, passed down through the generations until recently. It was professionally restored when it was put into its current frame in the early 1970's.
