On the night stand next to me was a bottle of water. I reached for it longing for the refreshing cascade of water to sooth my dry scratchy throat. The water had lost its chill, and the condensation on the outside was room temperature. That didnt matter to me at this point. I was so dehydrated that I could feel my muscles cramping. I couldnt remember what the dream was, just running and falling. Attempting to go back to sleep was meaningless at this point. My alarm would sound in forty-five minutes. I picked up my phone from the nightstand, and shut it off. Slowly I made my way out of bed, and down the hall to the restroom. Outside I could hear cicadas and crickets meaning the birds havent yet rose to sing their morning songs. I took my ritualistic morning piss and washed the sleep from my eyes. I made a protein shake for my breakfast. It was disgusting as usual. Today has all the makings of the greatest day of my life, I thought to myself. It was my thirtieth birthday, and I was starting my first day as a manager at the local Grand bank branch. They had finally promoted me, but they made my first day a little inconvenient. To top it all off I would be leaving work early to marry the woman of my dreams. Her name is Sarah, and I belonged to her totally body and mind. In the years before we met I hadnt been the nicest guy to know. She had saved me from the memories that haunted my past. Now I had promised to spend the rest of my life making hers more beautiful and romantic than she can ever imagine. I made my way to the closet and removed my running shoes. They were heavily worn with a few holes here and there, but they were reliable. I had spent most of my life obsessing over consistency. This had lead me to have many worn out things; slowly Sarah has begun dressing me in nicer clothes. "In her opinion." With a chuckle to myself I made my way to the car; as I waited for the engine to warm up I looked through my CD collection and found my Reggae C.D. It was the best way to start your morning in my opinion. I enjoyed the smell of the early morning hours. The scent of trees and morning dew flooded my nostrils. The moons soft light bright and full caught me in a momentary trance. What a lovely morning for a run I thought. The south end of the lake was my favorite strip of hiking trail to use. I heard the faint sound as the engine idle slowed signaling that it was ready. I put the car in gear and began the short scenic drive to the nature trail. I exited my vehicle, and slowly began my stretches. I heard a coyote howl in the distance, and an owl shriek somewhere nearby. The air was cooler as it blew in across the water. The distinct fishy smell was strong but when mixed with the pine needles I didnt mind so much. There was a moment of nostalgia. It was the middle of October so the sound of rustling leaves was drowning out most of the wildlife. The same sound I had come to look forward to every morning. Something about how everything is waking rested and ready just made me smile. The wind was mild, but the air just cold enough to burn after my first mile. It was still dark but the faint glow of dawn was starting to creep into the sky. While I ran I thought of the vows that I had written for Sarah. She knew I wasnt that great with emotional things, and on more than one occasion I had embarrassed her. I felt like I owed her something beautiful for saving me, which only caused me to go all out with my vows. Leaving me at my most vulnerable. I wasnt scared, no it was something more like inadequacy. There was a loud crash in the trees to my right, but I dismissed it. Sarah had picked the perfect field to get married in it was truly a sight to behold amazing and majestic it stood in a natural grove of trees with one lone tree in the center. All the better for them to stand under during their vows, and there were just enough leaves left to keep it looking full of ambers and browns. There was a feeling like being watched that flooded over me. My thoughts were pulled away from Sarah. I slowed to a fast walk taking a small break, as I caught my breath my pulse slowed, and the volume on the world around me turned up. I adjusted to it, and quickly heard the sound of foot steps behind me. They werent fast, a slow trot at most and fairly far behind. I looked ahead on the path a faint morning fog had begun to settle in the moonlight making it dance with each passing breeze. What had always been relaxing and peaceful had now become eerie and disturbing. The hair on my neck stood up, and my sweat turned cold. I became uneasy. Picking up my pace I tried to take my mind off the irrational fear. I began to think of Sarah again she had been acting anxious, and talking about being bored on more than one occasion. Asking what there was to do. I would always respond "what do you think" and every time she would say "I think I love you" the perfect words to.... Whoever was behind me was closer now their footsteps faster and heavier each one making a "thud" "thud" "thud" as it approached. There was a bend in the trail up ahead where I always liked to stop and take a short break. Usually I would watch the sunrise, but it was absent this morning due to my early arrival. I heard the jogger slow as I did. Making me more uncomfortable. The lake air hit my sweat covered skin chilling me to the bone. I sat on a dead tree that had always been there. The footsteps had stopped. I looked around there was no one there. Silence, complete silence. Why werent there any bugs? No crickets, No frogs, Nothing. I looked around frantically I know there was someone there. "HELLO" I said with a deeper than normal voice, silence. My mind began to race. Where was the jogger? A freight train smashes into my left hip breaking my spine like a twig. The loud crack of my bones rang out in the silence; as my head hit the ground white light filled my vision. There she stood her hair was a beautiful caramel color and slightly tickled at her collar bone as the wind slipped by. Her eyes look up at me slowly as if time was letting me see every instance of her beauty. As her gaze catches mine a smile explodes across her face. In that moment, in that one look, I see all the I love yous that all the languages have ever spoken through the history of the world. Her smile was the music that filled my life. She reaches her hands out to me in them she holds in my intestines Its not Her anymore Its Brandon as a child he is screaming but there is no sound only the mangled remains of his face gnarled with anger I finally see what he is saying "its your fault". Pain horrible pain filled my world. My lower stomach felt as if a vice was being stabbed into me and twisted slowly. I leaned forward feeling warmth rush through my belly. It was a wolf monstrous in size eating me. Blood poured from his mouth as he chomped on my insides with his back teeth, kicking his head back in short burst as he swallowed. I could feel all of it; every second became an eternity. I tried to scream but the terror was too great. I was being eaten alive! The beast could sense my panic and began eating more ravenously; tearing out my bowels with rapid precision. Why wasnt I dead? It didnt make any sense! I watched for ten more minutes in complete agony. My thoughts turned back to Sarah.
