23 Vol Set Mark Twain Author's National Edition-1910s-Illustrs-No V12 or V15

Description: Offered is this antique set of the works of Mark Twain, the "Author's National Edition", published by Harper & Brothers in New York. The complete set consists of 25 volumes; volumes 12 ("Tom Sawyer") and 15 ("The Prince and the Pauper") are missing here for a total of 23 volumes in this lot. The volumes have various copyright dates but the entire set was first issued in 1909 and then re-issued beginning in 1913 with the cover design of the volumes in this lot. There are numerous black and white illustrations on glossy pages throughout the set. Each book is approx. 7 1/2" x 5 1/4", with the number of pages varying. All volumes are in at least good condition, some are in very good condition. The red hard covers have only light wear, with the exception of Volume XIX (Sketches New & Old), which has a few tiny holes in the top left of the front cover (see last photo) but some have some light soiling and/or light fading. The gold words on the spines are still mostly shiny. There is no cracking inside either the front or back cover of any volume. The white endpapers have yellowed and have some light soiling. A few volumes have the name of a previous owner written inside the front cover, but most do not, and one book (Volume XXV, the last-"Christian Science") has a previous owner's bookplate inside the front. Of course I have not examined each and every page out of the over 5,000 in this set but after several look-throughs I see no missing or torn pages and all of the pages are well-attached to the binding, although it's possible I have overlooked a loose page or two. They have browned slightly but are otherwise mostly clean, with some occasional spotting (this seems to be more prevalent on the title pages), and some volumes have spotting on the page edges, seen when the books are closed. I see a few "dog-eared" pages. I see no writing in the books except for the previous owner's name, already mentioned, but there may be some underlining or other minor marks, but if so this is not extensive. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions.
