Description: 20th century, Sumatra Island, Indonesia, carved wood pengulu, Pistol style keris handle. The handle is carved into the form of an abstracted inclined bird head and body. Pengulu means village headman or leader. The shape is artfully carved and rounded into the bird form. Incised lines are carved along the sides and curl along the back. The wood has a swirly grain pattern and a warm brown color and has a smooth finish. The handle is in overall good condition.
