Description: For sale is a pair of 1950s Vintage Freeman 2827 Black Calf Cap Toe Oxford Quarter Brogue Dress Shoes Men's 9 C with Original Box & Shoe Bags! Freeman Shoe Corporation was founded in Beloit, Wisconsin by Richard Edgar Freeman and Horace Cleveland Freeman. The two brothers ran away from home, taking up the cobbling trade in Tomahawk, Wisconsin. Their skills producing quality footwear proved so great, that they were turned away from active military service during the First World War; the U.S. Government decided the Freeman Brothers could better serve the war effort by making boots for the soldiers. A family-owned business, Freeman Shoes was a quality mid-tier shoemaker. By today's standards however, they'd be approaching luxury; after all, calfskin uppers and welted construction were their standard. As was the case with many American shoemakers, Freeman struggled with increasingly casual American fashion trends. Changing corporate ownership hollowed out their offerings, and by 1992, their original factory in Beloit had closed. This pair here is a real "time capsule" of a shoe and an exceptional example of Freeman's output at their zenith! A simple quarter brogue balmoral oxford, this style (the 2827) shines in it's simplicity. It features a premium leather upper of black calfskin, robust Goodyear Welted construction, and a last just as much in style today as it was then. Given the relative rarity of vintage Freeman Shoes from this era, this pair is excitingly complemented by their original shoebox and period Freeman woven shoebags! These shoes feature a richly patinaed black calfskin leather upper, classic midcentury quarter brogue cap toe oxford dress shoe design, flat braided black laces, leather and canvas (for ventilation) lining, leather sockliner, cushioned leather insole, leather midsole, leather outsole, leather and rubber heel (with nails), and Goodyear Welted Construction. *Note: This pair comes with the rarely seen and highly collectible addition of their original shoebox, and period knit shoe bags! For reference, here are the approximate measurements (taken along the outsole): Length - just over 11.75" Width (at the ball of foot) - 4" These shoes have been worn sparingly and maintained exceptionally well. A testament to how little they were worn, they still feature their original outsoles and heels (both firm with a tremendous amount of life left). While it's difficult to deduce the year of manufacture with certainty, I suspect these were made in the early 1950s (maybe '51). The shoe box and leather sockliner feature the branding: "Wonderful feeling Freeman Shoes for men;" this slogan being part of their ad campaigns in the early 1950s (you can see it featured prominently in many 1950-53 advertisements). Further if Freeman Shoes followed the dating conventions of other competitors like Florsheim or Allen Edmonds, the "K01" marked on the lining, indicating 1951, may even be likely. I first rehydrated these shoes multiple times, using Weimans Leather Conditioner, then cleaned them, inside and out, with Weimans Leather Wipes, deep cleaned and conditioned with Lexol Cleaner and Conditioner, edge-dressed/polished the sole-sidewall/edge with Saphir Beaute du Cuir Shoe Cream, polished them with Saphir Beaute du Cuir Shoe Cream, and Oiled the soles with Saphir Mdaille d'Or Sole Guard. They come from a pet and smoke-free home. Shoe trees are not included. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask! Also, feel free to check out our account for other quality offerings! (Including multiple other shoes in this exact size!).
