Description: A 1942 Vintage WWII “AMES” piton hammer originally designed during WWII for use by the famed 10th Mountain Division, Camp Hale in Colorado. This hammer came from a veteran’s estate. Actual 10th Mountain Division /WWII vintage piton hammers are quite rare and are extremely tough to find.If you are a skier or climber from Colorado you’ve probably heard of the 10th Mountain Division. If you are an old climber you have probably clipped into many of their pitons over the years. The US Army’s first and only Mountain Infantry Division trained at Camp Hale, Colorado during World War II. Many manufacturers produced mountain climbing equipment for the military. Preston and Ames Manufacturing Group were probably the most common perhaps only manufacturers of pitons. The only WWII piton manufacturers I've seen are Ames and Preston. Additionally not all us military pitons were identified by date or manufacturer. The very common black coated pitons that you find on EBAY are all post war manufacture. Ames was a manufacturer for the US military climbing hardware during the war years (1941-1945) and is commonly associated with the Tenth Mountain Division. Any climbing gear that is identified as “AMES” was manufactured during the war. The Ames Manufacturing Group did not manufacture climbing equipment post war.
