Note Features:FR# 2309Known as a North Africa WWII Emergency Issue Silver CertificateSigned by: Julian | MorgenthauSeal Color: Yellow $10 1934A North Africa Silver Certificate As part of their campaign against the Axis powers during World War II, the Allies launched a significant military operation against the Vichy French in North Africa. This effort, known as Operation Torch, began on November 8, 1942, and was led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Allied forces occupied French Morocco and Algeria, while the Free French forces took control of French West Africa. The success of Operation Torch marked a crucial turning point in the war, eliminating Axis control over vital North African oil reserves and providing the Allies with a strategic base for advancing into southern Europe. U.S. soldiers participating in this campaign were paid in cash, raising concerns among Allied leaders about the risk of enemy capture of the payroll. To address this issue, a distinct series of notes, referred to as "North Africa notes," was created for troop payments. All military personnel serving in North Africa received these special silver certificates, which featured a unique yellow seal. This measure was taken as a safeguard; if the German forces captured the money, all silver certificates with a yellow seal could be invalidated, rendering the seized currency worthless to the enemy. Following the successful North African campaign, the yellow seal notes were also utilized during the Sicilian campaign in 1943. Unlike the “Hawaii” notes, which circulated among the general population in Hawaii, North Africa notes were distributed exclusively to military personnel. In addition to their distinctive yellow seal, North Africa notes do not have clear markings indicating their specific purpose. They are the only silver certificates with yellow seals and are available in one-, five-, and ten-dollar denominations. All one-dollar notes are from the series 1935A, while the five-dollar notes belong to the series 1934A, and the ten-dollar notes come from both the 1934 and 1934A series. The plain series 1934 ten-dollar note is quite rare, whereas the other North Africa notes are generally accessible, often found in circulated condition. Similar to the "Hawaii" notes, many North Africa notes were kept as souvenirs by GIs. These notes serve as intriguing relics from a significant historical struggle, one whose effects are still felt around the world more than 70 years later. This is an excellent note to add to your collection. Add this note to your cart today!
