Description: The story of the Hummocks and eventually John Taylor starts with his mother, Else. As you will see in the other lots we will be listing, Else was the heart of her family and spent her days raising her only child John, taking care of animals from hawks to dogs to monkeys in an incredible home menagerie, and building out her dream home of the Hummocks. This listing is for a grouping of items presented to Else by her future in-laws, the Taylors. The leather bindings are GORGEOUSLY tooled, with her name either on the outside or just inside. They show normal signs of age, but are in fantastic condition overall. The jewelry box lining is a bit loose and chipping. The interior separators have come loose in the large portfolio binder. The diary/notebook is in fantastic condition with no issues. Its about 1/4 full of notes, signatures, diary entries and more. The back 3/4 or so is blank. Also included is a hand-made leather slipcover that the notebook has been stored in for over 100 years. It is in rough shape, with many discolorations, but shows the care that was taken to keep this book pristine. You can feel the weight of history and age when you hold these items. Please view the images for approximate size. This is a lot from a huge collection of memorabilia spanning the 1800s to 1960s, encompassing the Loeffelholz, Taylor, Sutterle and Grundmeyer families who established an amazing household called the Hummocks in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This collection came from a thrift store in central Texas that accepts donations and also purchases in bulk from various estates and other bulk auctions. They did not know anything more than is seen in the photos and documentation, and could not pinpoint where the items came from. I do not have any more information other than what you see and read. We will be listing all the lots in the coming days.
