Description: 100% FEEDBACK ~ 25 YEARS ON EBAY ~ 5-STAR SERVICE ~ MY OWN STORY BOOK by ANDREW LANG Bristol: ArrowsmithNew York: Longmans, Green 1895 First edition. Illustrated by Gordon Browne,T. Scott, and E. Al Lemann. Decorated greencloth with gilt and silver cover illustration. ANDREW LANG [Born at Selkirk, 31 March, 1844, and educated at Edinburgh Academy and St. Andrews University. He then, at the age of 21 (almost) went to Oxford, matriculating at Balliol College in 1865; Exhibitioner, 1865-8; B.A., 1869; M.A., 1875 He was Fellow of Merton College until 1876, and subsequently an Honorary Fellow; he also received the Hon. D.Litt. degree from Oxford. In 1888 he was Gifford Lecturer on Natural Science at the University of St. Andrews. He commenced to write seriously soon after taking his B.A. degree, and became a voluminous and versatile author. His long-continued series of colored Fairy Books and Story Books almost exhausted the rays of the spectrum; he wrote by himself or in collaboration with various people--as with Rider Haggard; he translated, edited, contributed introductions and notes, and in addition was long responsible for the department At the Sign of the Ship in Longman's Magazine. As a Scotsman, he was naturally interested in the famous and unfortunate Mary and her mysteries; but his range was so wide and his knowledge so adequate that there were few subjects which he did not touch attractively and skilfully. He had the gift of brilliant gossip, and could be serious when his mood seemed lightest; his middle-aged cynicism was never corrosive. Mr. Lang, one very competent critic wrote, is always the brightest and most entertaining ofwriters. Homer may nod, but his translator never. He died in 1912, after holding a great position in letters for a long time.] First edition of one of the earliest of the Fairy Books.Black and white illustrations throughout. Front hingewebbing visible but binding remains good and strong. All edges gilt. Covers with light soiling and rubbing. No writing or marks - - a very clean copy indeed.
