Description: Stunning antique 4 volume partial leather hardcover set of "The Comedies of Shakespeare," illustrated by Edwin Abbey. Printed in the 1890s, and a numbered limited edition of only 750 copies. Spines beautifully tooled and gilt. In fair to good condition only. See photos. Interiors toned. Considerable and heavy (and often unsightly) foxing affecting many pages throughout each volume; particularly the beginning (preliminary/title pages etc), ending pages, and even heavily so on all illustration pages, where they are visible in swaths and clusters of unattractive spotting. See photos for some examples. Most of the pages with text only are in better condition with less severe foxing. Occasional obvious offsetting and staining from plates onto neighboring pages. Occasional uneven-ness or corner of a page flaked off from the pages being rough-cut. Exteriors with some light surface scuffing, rubbing, scratching and fading; hinges scuffed and worn. Board corners bumped and with some scuffing. Occasional creases to endpapers. Volumes III and IV with a few minor liquid shadow stains on a few preliminary pages, no further traces or damage of it. Volume IV with a couple small black soiling stains on top edge to gilt. A very few pages left uncut in the printing process, fusing neighboring pages together. Bindings mostly square and solid and have held up well; Volume II has some cracking and definite weakening in the area holding the front board together, and is at risk of cover detaching completely if mishandled.
