Description: James Garfield was born in a log cabin in northeastern Ohio and, while a youth, helped pull the ropes along the barge canals towing boats to earn money for the family. Made of brass or bronze, that poor upbringing is to what this 1" metal token from the 1880 election refers, or this could be a token made for his Inaugural since it has that 1881 date. Garfield, a Civil War general, was the victorious republican nominee with Chester Arthur in one of the closest elections in our history against another Civil War general who was much more famous, Winfield Scott Hancock. But the president was shot on July 2nd, 1881, later dying from the wounds in mid-September, so Arthur took over the top job for the rest of Garfield's term.
