Published by The Society of Antiquaries, who began a large paper series on English cathedrals in 1795. These comprised volumes on St Stephen's Capel, Westminster, as well as Exeter Cathedral, Bath Abbey, and Durham Cathedral. The series was abandoned due to the high fees charged by Carter, but the present volume was finally published about a decade later after a bequest from Richard Gough. The very scarce first edition of this work, rarely seen on the market in any edition. With observations on the cathedral followed by a series of nineteen striking plates, each with descriptive text. Collated, complete.Biographical information on John Carter loosely inserted. CONDITION Rebound in quarter crushed morocco binding over cloth covered boards, titles in gilt to matching morocco label to front board. Externally lovely. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting scattered to leaves.
