Description: This Bellarmine salt glazed stoneware jug is 14 inches tall and about 7 inches wide. It's been in our collection for about 30 years. The antique dealer / picker we bought it from said he used to be a diver for the state of South Carolina. And he pulled this jug from the river near Charleston. If there was any documentation of that, I would have put a 1 in front of what I'm asking. The conjecture at the time was whether it came over on one of the early ships, or did a German potter immigrant of that time make it here? The jug itself speaks volumes about being salt glazed. Either 16th or 17th century. The jug was cut from the wheel with a wire drug through the wet clay. Potters still do that. It's an ovoid form very typical of that time. The mouth is in perfect condition. It has light underfired areas on the side which I think are from sitting close to other jugs in the kiln and the salt not reaching everywhere.
